Shell Fishing Club History
Shell Fishing club was formed in 1983 and out of the original six members only one remains, Derek Gotts, our Chairman.
The matches in those early days were fished mainly at Flixton Decoy with the occasional boat match taking place on Fritton Lake.
The earliest records of the club are from the AGM Minutes for 1986/7, which records the fact that the club was offered Aldeby Ponds One and Two, by the then owner Major Arnold at a fee of £10 per member per annum. This offer was taken up and the first year's rental was £200, by 1988 this rental had increased to £330 as the Club membership increased. In 1989 the club took over pond three at no extra cost.
The waters were purchased by the present owner (Mr M Attfield) in 1990 and rent for the water increased to £932 per annum. In 1992 an agreement was drawn up between Mr Attfield and Shell Fishing Club that gave the club more security. In place of an annual renewal a three-year deal was agreed with the option to extend indefinitely, both parties undertook to give twelve months notice to cancel the contract and the rent would be negotiable every three years, this agreement is still in use.
Over the years the ponds have been restocked with Carp, Tench, Perch and Bream. The fishing has been very spasmodic and it is not seen as an ideal match fishing water as excessive bank side disturbance really affects the fishing. During pleasure fishing sessions much better bags of fish are usually caught.
The club match fishing section is organized and run by Carl Warren and is well supported during the summer months but attendances do tend drop off during the winter months. The match fishing although competitive is still fun and is enjoyed by all participants.
The social side of the fishing club has been actively developed in recent years and the affiliation to Kirkley Sports and Social Club gave the club a "home base" that resulted in social events taking place for the first time.
in 2005 members agreed to move the Social events venues and now meet on Wednesday evenings at Uplands Community Centre and everybody is welcome to come along and have a drink and a chat. The club has always been promoted as a family orientated where the fishing is friendly and fun
